A simpler way to manage fire damper reporting

​Ask anyone who's spent a morning surrounded by ductwork and they'll tell you one of the biggest headaches with fire damper testing isn't always the test itself. It's knowing for certain which damper you're looking at and fire damper reporting.

A commercial building can have hundreds of fire dampers. They can look almost identical, sit in awkward locations and may have been installed years apart by different contractors, using different labelling systems – or no labelling system at all.

Get the ID wrong and the test result, photographs and compliance record can all end up attached to the wrong asset.

Then, when somebody comes back six or twelve months later, the engineer has to work it all out again.

There's no separate spreadsheet to update later and no relying on somebody remembering which damper was which.

Next visit: scan it and get on with the job

This is where Auto ID really earns its keep.

When the engineer returns for the next scheduled inspection, they simply scan the tag.

The correct asset record opens in the Rugged Data mobile app, giving them access to the information already held against that damper, including its location, details and previous test results.

There's no hunting through a spreadsheet trying to match up asset numbers.

No guessing which of several identical-looking dampers you're standing in front of.

Scan it. Test it. Record the result. Move on.

And because the result is being recorded against that specific asset, you maintain a clear history for that damper over repeat visits.

The office gets the information too

Everything recorded during the inspection feeds into The Hub, Rugged Data's back-office management platform for fire damper reporting.

Information entered by the engineer through the app is available to the back-office team and information supplied by the office is available to the engineer in the field.

It means everyone is working from the same information rather than having job details in one system, photos somewhere else and test results waiting to be typed up.

The Building Safety Act and the wider changes to building safety regulation have put greater emphasis on keeping accurate and accessible information about building safety.
